Introduction to Traditional Rug Hooking (Finished)

Using the very simple technique of traditional rug hooking, participants can discover ways to use their ʻstashʼ to create a work of art, while exploring colour and texture.
Rug hooking aficionado Jane Bridgeman will provide an overview of traditional rug hooking, including types of hooks, backings, frames, fibres and cutters. After a short demonstration of hooking technique, you will get assistance to hook a small 5” x 7” mat from a kit containing linen backing, and a range of fibres including hand-dyed yarn, roving, wool strips, wool flannel, silk sari ribbon, and silk yarn. The small project can be completed in class, allowing easy progression to larger hooked landscapes or abstract works in the future.

Several different simple finishing options will be demonstrated, as will transfer of a pattern to backing.
Different types of frames and hooks will be available for loan during class, making this a very accessible way for anyone curious about the technique to try it out without first investing in tools.

Learn how to get started on a top-down raglan pullover. As you work down from the neckline, we will get your stitch markers set up in the correct place and ensure the increases are forming correctly. Then we will get your body separated from your sleeves, so you can carry on knitting the sweater as you choose.

Bring your hook, hoop and yarn/wool/fabric stash to tackle your own ʻGreat Canadian Landscapeʼ project. Hook a landscape in a season which suits your stash.

Over 4 sessions, learn to create contrast and interest in your foreground, mid-ground, and background using both hooking techniques and your materials.

In this class the participants will learn to create a “two sided” fabric, using two different colour yarns and the brioche stitch.

The two-colour brioche stitch is knitted on circular or double pointed needles. All rows are worked twice, once in the leading colour yarn, and once in the contrasting colour yarn.

The Lierne Cowl is a lovely example of Twisted stitch knitting. This project includes many technical elements such as: provisional cast on, knitting in the round, picking up live stitches, changing gauge through the use of needle changes, simple lace stitches, using a cable needle and blocking. This class would be ideal for knitters already comfortable with knit and purl stitches to increase their knowledge of some of the finer elements to make a spectacular garment.

Using a modular technique, we will create a multicoloured vest incorporating 3 solid colours and 1 variegated yarn. Fingering/sock weight yarn results in an easy to wear and versatile garment. Personal colour choice will ultimately decide the flare of the finished vest. From dramatic to subtle, the choice is yours. Pattern is provided. The classes are scheduled to allow time for you to complete the vest and finish it in the final class. This class is suitable for anyone comfortable with garter stitch.

Mosaic Knitting is a term coined by Barbara Walker to describe slip stitch knitting using 2 colours. This simple, yet effective technique can be used to create stunning designs without having to work with more than 1 yarn at a time. We will work on a series of patterns to make a”Sampler” that can be joined and made into a cowl, or continued into a scarf
