Using the very simple technique of traditional rug hooking, participants can discover ways to use their ʻstashʼ to create a work of art, while exploring colour and texture.
Rug hooking aficionado Jane Bridgeman will provide an overview of traditional rug hooking, including types of hooks, backings, frames, fibres and cutters. After a short demonstration of hooking technique, you will get assistance to hook a small 5” x 7” mat from a kit containing linen backing, and a range of fibres including hand-dyed yarn, roving, wool strips, wool flannel, silk sari ribbon, and silk yarn. The small project can be completed in class, allowing easy progression to larger hooked landscapes or abstract works in the future.
Several different simple finishing options will be demonstrated, as will transfer of a pattern to backing.
Different types of frames and hooks will be available for loan during class, making this a very accessible way for anyone curious about the technique to try it out without first investing in tools.
