We’ve recently expanded our selection of sock yarn! Creative Yarns is now carrying Smooshy by Dream in Color Yarn.

Inspired by the richly textured hues found in nature, the colorways of Dream in Color are hard to beat. Beautifully saturated solids and gorgeously painted multicolors will elevate your craft to the next level.

Smooshy Sock Yarn is a bouncy, squishy fingering weight superwash merino and nylon blend that holds up wonderfully in socks and wears well in accessories and garments. Size is approximately 420 yards/ 4 ounces. 85% superwash merino wool, 15% nylon.

Just because it’s called sock yarn doesn’t mean you have to knit socks with it!

New! Yarns from Knitting for Olive.

Posting date: 24 October 2022

We’re delighted to start carrying some beautiful new yarns from Knitting for Olive,  a small, mother-and-daughter Danish yarn company.  They are knitters and knitwear designers first, so their yarns come from their own love of high-quality, natural fibres that are environmentally friendly, cruelty-free, and easy to work with.

Knitting for Olive Merino is produced from Patagonian merino, where sheep are not subjected to mulesing. Pure Silk is spun from pure bourette silk (raw silk) produced from silk fibers collected from cocoons after the chrysalises are allowed to mature into moths and escape. Both yarns are spun and dyed in Italy using environmentally safe practices, and the finished yarns are STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® certified, meaning that they are free from any harmful chemicals.

These are lovely yarns to work with. The quality of the yarn and beauty of the colours elevate simple designs to elegance and luxury.  We can’t wait to see what wonderful things our customers will make with these new yarns.

Pattern suggestion: Bibbe pullover

Posting date: 4 October 2022

Fall is officially here. The start of fall in the Northern Hemisphere was couple weeks ago and what is the best way to celebrate than to knit up an oversized pullover? Creative Yarns is here with a weekly pattern suggestion.

Step one is to pick a nice pattern. Creative Yarns suggests Bibbe pullover by Meghan Kelly. It is an oversized dolman pullover worked in pieces from the bottom up. Increases are worked at the underarms to shape the sleeves. Short rows shape the shoulders. When working the front, the neck shaping is worked simultaneously with the short row shaping. pattern suggestion bibbe pullover

Step two is to pick a nice yarn. We decided to knit this beautiful pullover with Arranmore Light by The Fibre Company. It is woollen spun DK weight yarn. It is 80% merino wool, 10% cashmere and 10% sillk. Garments made with this yarn are light and warm at the same time.

Set-in sleeves, simplified

Skill level: Intermediate/ExperiencedSet-in Sleeves
Date:
Thursday, 19/Jun, 6:00pm – 8:30pm (1 session, 2.5 hours)
Instructor:
Michelle Porter
Cost:
$30 + HST

Do you struggle with knitting patterns for sweaters and other garments designed with set-in sleeves?  You’re not alone.  Many of us have unfinished sweater projects in the backs of our closets; projects that ‘don’t seem to be working’, but we’re not sure why, or what we would need to do to fix them.  Perhaps the pattern is unclear, or poorly designed for different sizes, or we just need to make changes for our specific body measurements, and set-in sleeves can make it hard to understand how to read a pattern and modify it to fix specific problems.

Join experienced garment designer Michelle Porter for this workshop on set-in sleeves.  She will be teaching the design aspects involved in creating the sleeve cap and the armhole of a set-in sleeve sweater.  How the measurements and shaping of the pieces should correspond and come together to fit each other and the wearer exactly. This class is mostly theory, using measurements from our bodies and a tension gauge from a swatch.
